MOVE FROM AUSTRALIA He left Australia and moved to the United States of America in 1991 in order to train in a more competitive environment. He continued to represent his country of birth at the Olympic Games and the world championships, but after permanently settling in the United States of America he began competing for his adopted country in 2007. "It was one of the toughest decisions I went through." (sidelinesmagazine.com, 01 Apr 2021; phillipdutton.com, 22 Nov 2017)
OTHER ROLES He was a founding member of the Professional Riders Organization, which is now known as the Eventing Riders Association of North America [ERA], and served as president in 2012 and 2013. (phillipdutton.com, 19 Jun 2019; aikenstandard.com, 02 Mar 2019)
AGE IS JUST A NUMBER He has been motivated to prolong his career after seeing American football quarterback Tom Brady win his seventh Super Bowl title at age 43 in February 2021. "I was very inspired by Tom Brady in the Super Bowl, because he kind of proved that there's no set age or number for when you can do your best. I don't think there's a set number when you have to stop. I'd like to go for as long as I can, but I also don't want to be stupid about it. I don't see a retirement date at this stage. As long as I'm not embarrassing myself or the family, I think I can keep going for a while." (sidelinesmagazine.com, 01 Apr 2021) |
