TWO HORSES LOST IN ONE YEAR
In March 2020 his top horse Bayro was euthanised. He won the Dutch championships in 2017 and 2018 with Bayro. One of Bayro's replacements, Eclips, was then sold by its owners in February 2021, despite Lips identifying the horse as having the potential to compete at the 2020 Olympic Games in Tokyo. "Bayro got my directions 10 times faster than an average horse. He was so intelligent, so easy. For eight years we trained daily together and then it ends like this. I have lost my horse, with whom I had so much fun every day. I knew I could compete for the medals with Bayro [at the 2020 Olympic Games] in Tokyo. It really is a shame that we were not able to keep Eclips for the Netherlands. Sportingly, it is of course a huge loss. I understand the co-owners that they wanted to sell, but we will miss him enormously. We ourselves were in favour of a third owner, and then there wouldn't have been a majority share [to sell]."
